Meghan Markle and Prince Harry

Harry appeared ‘scared to meet up with’ William at 2019 Easter church service – expert

MEGHAN MARKLE and Prince Harry were merely “ancillary branches” of the Firm when they were senior royals, an expert has suggested.

However, a royal author has highlighted how the Sussexes were not “central branches” of the monarchy due to Harry’s position in line to the throne.

The Duke is only sixth in line to the throne after his father Prince Charles, his brother Prince William and his brother’s three children.

Royal biographer Andrew Morton joined Roberta Fiorito and Rachel Bowie on their podcast Royally Obsessed and discussed the Sussexes’ role in the Firm.

He explained how due to the line of succession, the Meghan and Harry were on a similar path to the Queen’s younger sister, Princess Margaret.

Mr Morton also claimed that they are likely to become “more irrelevant” when Prince William’s children grow up.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have three children together – Prince George, seven, Princess Charlotte, five, and Prince Louis, two.

Mr Morton said: “Harry and Meghan were ancillary branches of the Royal Family, they were not central branches of the Royal Family.

“So they were going on the same trajectory as Princess Margaret.

“Princess Margaret, when she was 18 or 19, she was the most glamorous woman, she was matched with Elizabeth Taylor, in all furs and jewels and looking fabulous, but she was Number Two.”

The royal author added: “Same with Meghan and Harry – Number Two.

“And I’m sure they didn’t properly appreciate that but it does mean, as the years tick by, Meghan and Harry will become more and more irrelevant as George, Louis and Charlotte grow and become the chew toys of the tabloids.”

Other royal commentators claim that Meghan was a “huge missed opportunity” for the Royal Family.

Last month, British TV presenter Trisha Goddard told BBC Newsnight that the Duchess was “a huge beam of light” as a senior royal.

The broadcaster opined: “I think Meghan was a huge missed opportunity because Harry and Meghan were obviously screaming into their pillows not being heard.

“And first of all, I thought initially after the interview, I thought ‘oh that’s it the Royal Family have really quite blown it’.”
