Royal wedding dress: The cost of Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle’s wedding dresses

KATE MIDDLETON and Meghan Markle both married into the Royal Family in spectacular fashion – but how much did their wedding dresses cost?

Wedding dresses don’t usually come cheap – and you’re certainly not going to skimp on costs if you’re a senior member of the Royal Family. Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton have between them two of the most famous weddings in recent history – but how much did their wedding dresses cost? Kate Middleton’s iconic dress for her 2011 wedding to Prince William cost around half a million pounds. The duchess worked closely with designer Sarah Burton of Alexander McQueen to design the dress. “Miss Middleton chose British brand Alexander McQueen for the beauty of its craftsmanship and its respect for traditional workmanship and the technical construction of clothing,” the Palace revealed in a statement on Will and Kate’s wedding day. “Miss Middleton wished for her dress to combine tradition and modernity with the artistic vision that characterizes Alexander McQueen’s work. ”

The lace appliqué on the skirt and body was handmade by the Royal School of Needlework, using the Carrickmacross technique, which is originally from Ireland. Hand-cut lace flowers, including roses, thistle, daffodils, and shamrocks, were created individually and added onto ivory silk tulle. Made of Chantilly lace, this was the only part of the dress not sourced or supplied by a UK company.

The Duchess of Cambridge borrowed the Queen’s Cartier Halo tiara for the big day, which was originally purchased for the monarch by her father King George VI for her 18th birthday. Meghan Markle’s much simpler yet classic dress was designed by Claire Waight Keller of Givenchy – and is thought to have cost £100,000. “Ms Waight Keller last year became the first female Artistic Director at the historic French fashion house Givenchy,” read a statement from the Palace on the day. Pure white silk with a boat neck and three quarter length sleeves, the bride opted for a much simpler design than Kate. Ms Waight said after the big day: “I think she loved the fact that I was a British designer, and working in a house such as Givenchy which has its roots in a very classical, beautiful style.” Meghan wore a five metre-long white silk veil covering her face which included floral detail representing all 53 countries of the Commonwealth, as well as California poppies and wintersweet, a flower that grows in the gardens of Kensington Palace, their original UK home. The bride suggested the design because the Commonwealth was meant to be a central part of her and Prince Harry’s official royal work after they married.

However, the Royal with the most expensive wedding dress in history is Queen Letizia of Spain, who married King Felipe of Spain in 2004. The dress cost an incredible $8 million, or £6 million, and was designed by Royal courtier Manuel Pertegaz.
