Meghan Markle Channeled Princess Diana in her Blue Printed Knit

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry made an unlikely appearance yesterday as they took to Lincolnshire, England for the wedding of his cousin Celia McCorquodale. The Duchess of Sussex surprised us for the occasion, after wearing neutrals on her recent public appearances, in a blue-and-white printed dress by Oscar de la Renta.

The Duchess matched the frock in traditional royal fashion with a snowy fascinator, cutout pumps, and an apt box clutch. The resulting look made her look like a real-life porcelain vase but with her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana, she had an even better twinning moment.

In 1986 (when Harry was just two years old) during a trip to Saudi Arabia the Princess of Wales wore a similar blue and white design on a Catherine Walker tunic. Her version of the look featured white pants, white flats and earrings shaped like a moon. Daily Mail points out that the @loveprincessdiana fan account found the similarities between her matching outfits and Meghan’s.

Markle’s sartorial tribute to her late mother-in-law may have been entirely coincidental, but if it were scheduled it would not be a surprise. It is said that the Duchess of Sussex was a big fan of the late princess; she actually “wants to be Princess Diana 2.0,” Markle’s childhood friend told royal biographer Andrew Morton.

The Duchess even paid homage to Diana’s theme on her wedding day in a few respects. Her 16-foot veil has been seen as a reference to the trailing image of the princess from 1981. Markle’s second wedding dress was also considered to be reminiscent of Diana’s wardrobe, with its high neckline. She even borrowed an aquamarine cocktail ring from her late mother-in-law’s’ collection too.
